Management is a practical, day-to-day activity

The business section in bookshops is full of self-help, inspirational management books, showing you how to create a vision, take a ‘helicopter’ view and ‘strategise.’ But meanwhile back on the planet Earth (to quote Woody Allen) real management is a day-by-day, sometimes hour-by-hour activity and it’s hard. I have never been asked for advice on how to conduct a SWOT Analysis or write an ‘elevator pitch.’ I get embarrassed managers all the time asking how they can best deal with difficult conversations, like telling someone they have a personal hygiene problem, or dealing with two people who don’t get on, or someone who’s constantly late. These are the ‘everyday management’ issues, the ones that kind of get swept under the carpet, as we’re encouraged to look upwards; but the real problems that occur are not ‘up there,’ but down here, on the carpet. One of our customers, an SVP of a multi-national rang me at 10.00PM and after skirting round the issue for several minutes finally asked: “Bill how do I tell my Sales Director that she has zero table manners? She’s a real embarrassment!” His latest push into South America market, or restructuring the EMEA team hold no fear for him. What keeps him awake at night are the ‘soft’ issues, and we all know how hard these are, the so-called little things that kind of get forgotten with the focus being on the more sexy side of management. So what are we doing about it? Well just next week the cavalry arrives in the form of Fiona McBride who will be filming our new course ‘The Everyday Manager.’ She’ll take you through all the worries and concerns you have about dealing with those tricky situations that cause angst and sap so much time, and give you the skills, and confidence, to do it well.
